5mm PVC grey board is a solid, non-foamed rigid PVC sheet in grey color, used primarily in industrial fabrication, chemical engineering, water treatment, and construction applications where chemical resistance, dimensional stability, and weldability are required. At 5mm thickness, it provides a practical balance of mechanical rigidity, bending capability, and machinability for a wide range of fabricated components.
Grey is the standard industrial color for rigid PVC sheet in engineering applications. Unlike white or clear PVC sheet (which are more common in signage, packaging, and display), grey PVC sheet signals industrial-grade material and is the color most frequently specified in chemical plant construction, tank fabrication, and equipment manufacturing.
ONE Plastic manufactures grey PVC sheet as part of our PVC grey sheet product range. We supply 5mm grey PVC board to fabricators, contractors, and industrial buyers worldwide. Custom sheet sizes are available.
Material: Rigid PVC (polyvinyl chloride), solid, non-foamed
Color: Industrial grey
Thickness: 5mm
Standard Sheet Size: 1220 x 2440 mm (4' x 8'), 1000 x 2000 mm
Custom Sheet Size: Available upon request
Density: Approximately 1.4 g/cm3
Key Properties: Chemical resistant, weldable, bendable, self-extinguishing, dimensionally stable
Different thicknesses serve different purposes. Here is why 5mm is a commonly specified gauge for industrial PVC fabrication.
Practical Rigidity for Fabricated Parts: At 5mm, grey PVC board is rigid enough for self-supporting panels, tank walls (for smaller tanks), ductwork components, and equipment linings. It provides more structural capability than thinner gauges (2-3mm) while remaining significantly easier to work with than thicker plate (10mm+).
Bendable with Heat: 5mm PVC grey board can be heat-bent using a strip heater or oven to form angles, channels, and U-shapes for fabricated assemblies. This is a common requirement in chemical plant fabrication where bent PVC components line equipment, contain liquids, or form ductwork profiles.
Weldable: PVC grey board can be hot-air welded or solvent-welded to form joints, seams, and assembled structures. At 5mm, the material thickness is sufficient for reliable welded joints in tank construction and ducting applications. This is a key reason industrial fabricators choose solid PVC sheet over foamed PVC board for chemical engineering work.
Chemical Resistant: Grey rigid PVC offers excellent resistance to acids, alkalis, salts, and many industrial chemicals. It is widely used in chemical processing plants, water treatment facilities, and electroplating workshops where the fabricated components are in constant contact with corrosive substances.
Good Machinability: 5mm PVC grey board can be cut, drilled, routed, tapped, and threaded using standard workshop tools. It produces clean machined edges and accepts screws, bolts, and mechanical fasteners.
Self-Extinguishing: Rigid PVC is inherently self-extinguishing under standard test conditions, providing fire safety for indoor industrial installations. For applications with specific fire rating requirements, contact our technical team to confirm the appropriate grade.

| Factor | 2-3mm | 5mm | 10mm+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigidity | Flexible - suitable for linings and thin covers | Self-supporting for moderate-span panels and components | Highly rigid - structural plates and heavy-duty tank walls |
| Heat Bending | Easy | Good - standard thickness for bent fabricated components | More difficult - requires more heat and longer forming time |
| Welding | Possible but thin | Good - sufficient thickness for reliable welded joints | Good - standard for structural tank fabrication |
| Primary Use | Linings, thin covers, shims, insulation barriers | General industrial fabrication, ducting, tank components, equipment covers | Heavy structural fabrication, large tank walls, machine beds |
| Weight per m2 | ~2.8-4.2 kg | ~7.0 kg | ~14.0 kg+ |

This is the primary market for grey PVC sheet. 5mm grey board is used to fabricate:
Chemical storage tank linings and secondary containment
Acid and alkali resistant ducting and ventilation components
Drip trays and collection basins
Electroplating tank linings
Fume extraction hoods and enclosures
Grey PVC's chemical resistance makes it a standard material in chemical engineering workshops. For thicker structural components and large tank walls, see our broader PVC grey sheet range including 10mm, 15mm, and 20mm options.
Filter press plates and linings
Water channel and trough linings
Splash guards and containment barriers
Piping support brackets and clamps
Machine guards and safety panels
Equipment covers and access panels
Electrical insulation barriers
Control panel backing boards
Template and jig fabrication
5mm grey PVC board is also used in construction and interior fit-out as wet room wall cladding, laboratory work surface linings, clean room panels, and partition dividers. These are secondary applications where chemical resistance and moisture performance are the primary selection criteria.
For construction applications where lighter weight is more important than chemical resistance, our PVC foam board range may be a more suitable choice.

| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Table Saw / Circular Saw | Good - use fine-tooth blades for clean cuts |
| CNC Router | Good for custom shapes and detailed work |
| Jigsaw | Suitable for curved cuts |
| Band Saw | Suitable for thicker cuts and rip-cutting |
Note: Laser cutting is not recommended for PVC. PVC releases harmful and corrosive gases when processed with a laser. Use mechanical cutting methods.
5mm PVC grey board bends well with heat application:
Strip heater bending for straight-line bends (most common for angles and channels)
Oven heating for broader curves (used for ductwork and cylindrical forms)
Minimum bend radius depends on temperature and technique - generally a tighter radius is achievable at 5mm than at thicker gauges
Allow the bent material to cool fully before releasing to hold its shape.
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
| Hot-Air Welding | Standard method for fabricated PVC joints using PVC welding rod |
| Solvent Welding | Suitable for clean joints on flat surfaces |
| Extrusion Welding | Used for thicker joints and structural seams on larger fabrications |
5mm provides sufficient material thickness for reliable welded joints. Proper surface preparation (clean, dry, lightly scraped) is important for weld quality.
Standard drill bits and twist drills work well on 5mm PVC grey board. Use moderate speed and steady feed to avoid overheating. The material accepts screws, bolts, and rivets. For threaded connections, tapping is possible at 5mm thickness.
Industrial-Grade PVC Sheet: We produce grey PVC sheet specifically for industrial fabrication applications - with controlled thickness tolerance, consistent density, and reliable welding and bending performance.

Both are solid rigid PVC sheet, but they serve different markets. Grey PVC sheet is the standard color for industrial fabrication, chemical engineering, and construction applications. White PVC sheet is more commonly used in signage, display, packaging, and interior decoration. The material properties are similar, but grey is the industry-standard color for engineering and fabrication work.
Yes. 5mm grey PVC board can be hot-air welded using standard PVC welding rod, or solvent-welded for clean flat joints. At 5mm, the material provides sufficient thickness for reliable welded connections in tank, duct, and equipment fabrication.

Yes. 5mm is a popular thickness for heat-bent PVC components. It bends cleanly using a strip heater for straight-line bends, or an oven for broader curves. It is thick enough to provide structural rigidity in the finished bent form while still being manageable to form.
Standard sheet sizes are 1220 x 2440 mm (4' x 8') and 1000 x 2000 mm. Custom sheet sizes are available upon request to reduce cutting waste in your production process.
