Expanded PVC foam board is the standard, general-purpose type of PVC foam board used across signage, display, fabrication, and light industrial applications. It is produced through a free-foam extrusion process that creates a closed-cell foam structure with consistent density throughout the thickness of the sheet - making it lightweight, easy to cut, and cost-effective for a wide range of projects.

This page is specifically about the standard expanded PVC foam board type. If you are looking for a broader overview of all our foam board options, see our main PVC foam board page. If you need the harder-skin, higher-density variant with a smoother surface finish, see our PVC Celuka foam board page instead.

ONE PLASTIC manufactures standard expanded PVC foam board in thicknesses from 1mm to 30mm, in white, black, and custom colors, and in standard and custom sheet sizes for buyers worldwide.

What PVC Expanded Foam Board Is

Expanded PVC foam board (also called free-foam PVC board or Forex-style board in some markets) is produced by extruding a PVC-based foam formulation through a flat die. During extrusion, a foaming agent creates a uniform closed-cell structure throughout the sheet. The resulting board has:

  • A consistent foam core density from surface to surface

  • A smooth, slightly matte surface finish

  • A uniform cross-section with no distinct "skin" layer harder than the core

  • Lightweight handling characteristics relative to its panel stiffness

This is the most common and widely-used type of PVC foam board. When buyers search for "PVC foam board" without further specification, they are usually looking for this expanded variant.

Expanded PVC vs. Celuka vs. Co-Extruded Foam Board

The PVC foam board category is often confused because it contains three similar but distinct product types. Here is the practical difference:

Factor Standard Expanded Celuka Co-Extruded
Production Process Free-foam extrusion Celuka process - outer surfaces cool faster than the core, creating a denser skin Co-extrusion - a separate harder PVC layer is extruded on top of a foam core
Surface Finish Smooth matte, uniform throughout Harder, smoother "skin" surface with a slightly shinier finish Hardest surface with a clear differentiation between skin and core
Density Distribution Uniform across the thickness Slightly denser at the surfaces, softer in the core Distinct harder surface layer over a foam core
Stiffness Good for most applications Stiffer than standard expanded at the same thickness Stiffest of the three
Surface Hardness Moderate - acceptable for printing, painting, mounting Higher - better scratch resistance Highest - suitable for demanding surface applications
Cost Lowest of the three Moderate Highest
Best For General signage, displays, interior panels, mockups, craft Signage requiring higher durability, light cabinetry, furniture components Kitchen cabinets, bathroom panels, demanding surface-finish applications

For most signage, display, and general fabrication projects, standard expanded PVC foam board is the right choice. The harder-skin variants (Celuka and co-extruded) are worth paying for only when the application specifically requires better surface hardness, higher stiffness, or a more premium appearance.

Why Buyers Choose Standard Expanded Foam Board

Best Value for General Applications: For the majority of signage, display, and interior applications, expanded PVC foam board provides everything you need - flat panel behavior, printability, easy fabrication, moisture resistance - at the lowest price point in the foam board category.

Widely Available and Well-Understood: Expanded PVC board is produced by many manufacturers worldwide, so supply is stable and specifications are well-standardized. This reduces sourcing risk for ongoing production needs.

Easy to Fabricate with Standard Tools: Cuts cleanly with utility knives, table saws, CNC routers, and laser cutters. Holds screws and fasteners (at moderate thicknesses), accepts adhesives, and bonds with solvent cement. No special fabrication equipment is required.

Good Surface for Printing: The matte, slightly porous surface accepts UV flatbed printing, screen printing, and vinyl application with no primer needed for most ink systems. This makes it the standard substrate for print-on-demand signage.

Lightweight for Shipping and Handling: At roughly 0.5-0.55 g/cm3 density, expanded foam board is approximately 60% lighter than solid PVC sheet of the same thickness. This reduces shipping costs and makes large-format panels easier to install.

Compatible with Most Fabrication Workflows: Existing workshops with CNC routers, table saws, and sign-making equipment can process expanded PVC foam board without tool changes or setup adjustments.

Typical Applications

Signage and Graphics: Retail signs, wayfinding panels, menu boards, real estate signs, exhibition graphics. The smooth matte surface is ideal for UV flatbed printing and vinyl application.

Display and POS: Retail displays, countertop units, promotional structures, and event graphics. Expanded foam board can be CNC-routed, V-grooved for folding, and bonded into assembled display structures.

Interior Decoration: Wall cladding panels, ceiling tiles, interior partitions. Moisture-resistant and easy to clean, making it suitable for offices, retail spaces, and light commercial interiors.

Architectural Models and Prototyping: Model builders and architects use expanded foam board for structural models, mockups, and design prototypes. It cuts, glues, and paints cleanly.

Crafts and DIY: Hobby projects, cosplay props, school and exhibition projects. Lightweight and easy to work with basic hand tools.

Light Cabinetry and Shelving: Cabinet backing, shelf liners, and light furniture components where weight matters and full structural strength is not required.

Processing and Fabrication

Cutting

Method Notes
Utility Knife Score and snap works well for thin gauges (up to 5mm)
Table Saw Fine-tooth carbide blade produces clean straight cuts at all thicknesses
CNC Router Best method for shaped panels, lettering, and profiled edges
Laser Cutter Possible but not recommended - PVC releases chlorine gas when laser-cut

Joining and Assembly

Expanded PVC foam board accepts screws (at moderate thicknesses, 6mm+), rivets, PVC solvent cement, cyanoacrylate (CA glue), two-part epoxy, and hot melt adhesive. For visible assembly joints, solvent cement produces the cleanest result.

V-Grooving and Folding

Thicker expanded boards (6mm and above) can be V-grooved on a CNC router to create clean fold lines for box construction and display assembly.

Printing and Finishing

UV flatbed printing is the standard method for graphics on expanded foam board. Screen printing, vinyl application, and hand painting are all compatible. For most applications, no primer is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between expanded PVC foam board and Celuka PVC foam board?

Expanded foam board has a uniform foam structure throughout the sheet - the density is consistent from one surface to the other. Celuka foam board is produced using a different cooling process that creates slightly denser, harder "skin" layers on the surfaces while keeping the core softer. Celuka is stiffer and has a better surface hardness, but costs more. For most general signage and display applications, standard expanded foam board is the better value.

Is expanded PVC foam board suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, for short-to-medium-term outdoor use. Expanded PVC foam board is waterproof and UV-stable enough for seasonal outdoor signs, event graphics, and temporary installations lasting weeks to months. For permanent outdoor installations exposed to direct sun and weather year-round, thicker gauges or Celuka-grade board may be more appropriate.

What is the difference between 0.45 density and 0.55 density expanded foam board?

The 0.45 g/cm3 grade is slightly lighter and more economical, suitable for signage and general fabrication. The 0.55 g/cm3 grade is slightly denser, holds fasteners better, and has slightly better CNC edge quality - preferred for applications where screws or mechanical fasteners are used, or where edge finish is important.

Can I get expanded PVC foam board in black?

Yes. We produce expanded foam board in white (standard), black, grey, and custom colors. Black foam board is widely used for photography backdrops, display panels, and applications where white edges would be unwanted.

What is the maximum sheet size?

Our standard maximum is 2050 x 3050 mm. Larger sizes may be available on request depending on production scheduling. Contact us for specific size requirements.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on thickness, sheet size, and color. For standard white expanded foam board in common sizes, MOQ is typically manageable for mid-size buyers. Custom colors or non-standard sizes may require higher minimums. Contact us for a specific quote.
