PVC co-extruded foam board (also known as Celuka foam board or skinned foam board) is a rigid PVC board produced using a co-extrusion process that creates a denser, harder outer skin on both surfaces of the board while maintaining a lightweight foamed core in the middle. This dual-structure design is what distinguishes co-extruded foam board from standard expanded (free-foamed) PVC foam board.

The result is a board that looks and feels more like solid PVC on the outside - with a smooth, hard surface that resists scratches, accepts screws, and holds paint and laminate well - while remaining substantially lighter and more cost-effective than solid PVC sheet on the inside. This makes PVC co-extruded foam board the preferred choice for furniture, cabinetry, door panels, and fabrication applications where standard expanded foam board may not provide sufficient surface hardness or edge quality.

ONE Plastic is a PVC foam board manufacturer in China. We produce both standard expanded PVC foam board and co-extruded (Celuka) PVC foam board on dedicated production lines, allowing buyers to choose the right product for their specific application from a single factory.

  • Flame Rating: Self-extinguishing

Co-extruded vs. Standard Expanded PVC Foam Board

This is the question most buyers need answered first. Both products are PVC foam boards, but they are made differently and perform differently.

Standard expanded (free-foamed) PVC foam board has a uniform cellular structure throughout its entire cross-section. The surface and the core have the same density and hardness. This makes it lightweight, easy to cut, and economical - but the surface can be relatively soft, and machined edges may appear rough or fibrous.

Co-extruded (Celuka) PVC foam board is produced by extruding a solid PVC skin layer simultaneously with the foamed core. The outer skin is denser and harder than the core, creating a board with a smooth, solid-feeling surface and a lighter foamed interior.

Property Co-extruded (Celuka) Standard Expanded
Surface Hardness Higher - solid skin layer Lower - uniform foam throughout
Surface Finish Smooth, glossy, consistent Smooth but softer
Edge Quality (when cut/routed) Cleaner, more solid edges Can appear fibrous or rough
Screw Holding Better - denser skin grips screws Weaker - screws may pull out more easily
Paint / Laminate Adhesion Better - hard, smooth surface Good but may require more preparation
Weight Slightly heavier than equivalent expanded board Lighter
Cost Moderate - between expanded foam board and solid PVC Lower
Best For Furniture, cabinets, door panels, high-quality signage, fabrication Signage printing, displays, lightweight panels, cost-sensitive projects

Rule of thumb: Choose co-extruded foam board when the finished product will be machined, screwed, laminated, or edge-banded. Choose standard expanded foam board when weight and cost are the primary concerns and the board will mainly be printed on or used as a flat panel.

For projects where standard expanded foam board is sufficient, see our 2mm PVC foam board for thin signage applications or our general PVC foam board range.

Properties of PVC Co-extruded Foam Board

Harder Outer Surface: The co-extruded skin layer provides a surface that is noticeably harder than standard foam board. This means the board resists surface scratches better, produces cleaner CNC-routed edges, and delivers a more finished appearance in exposed applications where the surface is visible to the end user.

Better Screw and Fastener Retention: The denser skin layer gives screws and mechanical fasteners a firmer grip compared to standard foam board. This is particularly important for furniture and cabinet applications where hinges, handles, and shelf brackets need to hold securely over time.

Superior Edge Quality: When co-extruded foam board is cut or routed, the solid skin layer produces a clean, consistent edge that looks and feels more like solid material. Standard expanded foam board, by contrast, tends to show its cellular structure at the cut edge, requiring additional finishing in visible applications.

Smooth Surface for Finishing: The hard skin accepts paint, vinyl wrap, PVC laminate film, and wood veneer with good adhesion. The smooth, non-porous surface generally requires less preparation than standard expanded board before finishing.

Lightweight Core: Despite the harder outer skin, the foamed core keeps the overall board weight well below that of solid PVC sheet. This balance of surface performance and low weight is what makes co-extruded foam board attractive for furniture and construction applications where both properties matter.

Moisture Resistant: Like all PVC foam boards, the co-extruded variant offers excellent moisture resistance. The closed-cell structure absorbs very little water, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and other humid environments.

Self-Extinguishing: PVC co-extruded foam board is self-extinguishing, providing inherent fire safety for interior applications.

Applications of PVC Co-extruded Foam Board

Co-extruded foam board is used in applications where the board surface is visible, machined, or mechanically fastened - situations where standard expanded foam board may fall short.

Furniture and Cabinet Manufacturing

This is the primary application for co-extruded foam board. The harder skin and better screw retention make it suitable for:

  • Kitchen cabinet carcasses and doors

  • Bathroom vanity panels (moisture resistant, will not swell)

  • Wardrobe interior panels and shelving

  • Office furniture partitions and desktops

  • Modular furniture components

The material can be edge-banded, laminated, and screwed using the same tools and processes as wood-based panels. For projects specifically focused on door panel construction, see our PVC foam board for door panels application page.

Construction and Interior Cladding

  • Wall cladding and ceiling panels

  • Door frame and window surrounds

  • Bathroom and wet room wall panels

  • Partition walls and room dividers

  • Decorative trim profiles and mouldings

The smooth, hard skin provides a finished appearance straight off the production line, reducing the need for additional surface preparation in interior fit-out projects.

High-Quality Signage and Display

While standard expanded foam board is the most common material for everyday signage printing, co-extruded foam board is used for higher-end sign fabrication where:

  • CNC-routed dimensional letters and logos require clean, solid-looking edges

  • Engraved signage needs a smooth, hard surface for sharp detail

  • Display fabrication involves mechanical assembly with screws or fasteners

  • The sign will be handled frequently and needs scratch resistance

Industrial and Marine

  • Chemical-resistant wall and ceiling panels

  • Clean room surfaces

  • Vehicle interior panels (buses, RVs, containers)

  • Marine interior panels (boats, yachts)

  • Template and jig fabrication

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between co-extruded and expanded PVC foam board?

Co-extruded (Celuka) foam board has a denser, harder outer skin produced during the extrusion process, with a lighter foamed core in the middle. Standard expanded (free-foamed) board has a uniform cellular structure throughout - no distinct skin layer. Co-extruded board provides better surface hardness, screw holding, and edge quality, while expanded board is lighter and less expensive. See the comparison table above for a detailed breakdown.

Can PVC co-extruded foam board replace wood and MDF?

In many interior applications, yes. Co-extruded foam board offers comparable surface finish quality and screw retention to MDF, while adding moisture resistance, lighter weight, and zero risk of rot, mold, or termite damage. It is widely used as a replacement for MDF and plywood in kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and interior door panels, particularly in humid climates.

Is PVC co-extruded foam board waterproof?

The closed-cell PVC structure offers excellent moisture resistance. Co-extruded foam board is highly resistant to swelling, warping, and mold growth under normal moisture exposure, making it well-suited for kitchen, bathroom, and wet room applications.

What thicknesses are available?

We offer PVC co-extruded foam board in thicknesses from 3mm to 30mm. The standard sheet size is 1220 x 2440 mm (4' x 8'). Custom thicknesses and sheet sizes are available upon request.

Can co-extruded foam board be CNC-routed?

Yes. This is one of the key advantages of co-extruded foam board. The solid outer skin produces cleaner, more consistent routed edges compared to standard expanded foam board. CNC routing is commonly used to produce dimensional letters, signage, and fabricated furniture components from co-extruded board.

Is PVC co-extruded foam board fire resistant?

PVC co-extruded foam board is self-extinguishing - it does not sustain combustion and self-extinguishes once the flame source is removed. For applications with specific fire rating requirements, contact our technical team to confirm the appropriate grade.
