PVC Coated Iron Wire for PE Christmas Tree Leaf Production

Plastic-coated wire is a product manufactured by plastic-coating machines specifically for the production of PE Christmas tree leaves. In PE leaves, the plastic-coated wire primarily functions as the petiole, and is then bound together by artificial Christmas tree binding machines during the binding stage.

PVC coated iron wire is the support wire used inside PE injection-molded artificial Christmas tree leaves. It runs through the center of each molded leaf to provide the structural stiffness that holds the leaf shape in place - giving the finished branch the ability to stand up, bend, and hold its displayed form year after year.

This is not a broad coated-wire page. If you are looking for general industrial PVC-coated wire for garden, fence, or binding applications, this is not the right page. This page covers PVC-coated iron wire specifically produced for PE Christmas tree leaf production, supplied to tree factories as a support wire that sits inside the PE injection molded branch structure.

ONE PLASTIC supplies PVC coated iron wire as part of our complete Christmas tree production series, alongside injection machinery, molds, and assembly hardware.

What This Coated Wire Is Used for in PE Leaf Production

In a PE Christmas tree, each branch is produced by injection molding PE pellets around a pre-positioned iron wire. The wire acts as the skeleton of the leaf:

  1. A length of PVC-coated iron wire is cut to the target leaf length

  2. The wire is placed into the injection mold cavity

  3. PE pellets are injected around the wire, taking the shape of the leaf

  4. After cooling, the molded leaf - now with the wire embedded along its centerline - is removed from the mold

  5. Finished leaves are bundled into branches in downstream assembly

The wire gives each leaf three properties it would not have if the PE were molded alone:

Shape Retention: The embedded wire lets each leaf hold its shape after being bent during shipping, storage, or setup. Without the wire, molded PE would flex and deform permanently under repeated handling.

Adjustability: Consumers bend and shape tree branches during setup to achieve a fuller, more natural appearance. The iron wire makes this possible - branches bend, hold the bent position, and can be bent again the next year.

Structural Connection: Multiple leaves with protruding wire ends are bundled together to form a branch. The wire ends twist together into a single branch stem, which then connects to the tree hub with a hollow rivet and tree hub.

For more on how this fits into the overall PE tree workflow, see our guide on the production process of artificial Christmas trees.

Why Buyers Choose PVC-Coated Iron Wire Instead of Plain Iron Wire

PE tree factories could use plain uncoated iron wire as the leaf skeleton. Most do not. Here is why:

Bonding with PE Resin: The PVC coating creates a better interface between the iron core and the PE resin during injection molding. The coating helps reduce the risk of leaf slipping or rotation around the wire over time. Plain iron wire tends to be too smooth for consistent bonding, which can cause leaves to spin on the wire after repeated bending.

Rust Prevention: Plain iron wire rusts when exposed to moisture during storage, shipping, or use in humid environments. Rust staining through the PE leaf discolors the finished tree and shortens product life. The PVC coating seals the iron from moisture.

Smoother Wire Handling: Coated wire feeds more consistently through automated wire-cutting and mold-loading equipment. The coating reduces friction at feeder contact points and reduces the risk of iron chips damaging downstream machinery.

Color Consistency: PVC-coated wire is typically supplied in green to blend with the PE leaf color. Any part of the wire visible at the leaf tip or base looks intentional rather than like an industrial fastener.

Safety in Finished Product: A coated wire end is safer for consumers during tree setup than an exposed iron end. Plain iron wire ends can be sharp and cause minor cuts during branch bending.

Diameter, Length, and Coating Options

Wire specifications vary by tree size and leaf design. Typical parameters:

Parameter Typical Range
Iron Core Diameter 0.4 mm - 1.0 mm (varies by tree size and branch stiffness requirement)
Finished Wire Diameter (Iron + Coating) Approximately 0.1-0.2 mm larger than the iron core, depending on coating thickness
Coating Material PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
Coating Color Green (standard, matched to common PE leaf colors); custom colors available
Coating Thickness Thin layer sufficient to seal iron and provide PE bonding surface
Wire Cut Length Matched to leaf length requirement, typically 10-25 cm for standard Christmas tree leaves
Supply Format Pre-cut lengths or continuous spools for in-house cutting
Packaging Bundled pre-cut lengths or spool rolls, packed in cartons

Wire diameter selection guidance:

  • 0.4-0.5 mm: Small tabletop trees, lightweight branches, budget product lines

  • 0.5-0.7 mm: Standard full-size Christmas trees - the most common specification

  • 0.7-1.0 mm: Premium trees, heavier branches, commercial-grade trees that need to hold shape under weight

Custom wire diameters and coating thicknesses are available for non-standard branch designs. If your PE injection mold requires a specific wire specification, contact us with your target dimensions.

How the Wire Fits into PE Christmas Tree Branch Structure

A complete PE Christmas tree branch assembly looks like this:

PVC-Coated Iron Wire (this product) -> Embedded inside PE Molded Leaf -> Bundle of Leaves Forms a Branch -> Branch Connects to Trunk Hub via Hollow Rivet

Each stage depends on the one before it. If the wire is the wrong diameter or has poor coating, leaves slip on the wire, bend inconsistently, or fail to hold shape after bending. That failure then propagates downstream into branch quality and finished-tree appearance.

This is why most PE Christmas tree factories source their support wire from suppliers who understand the full production workflow, not generic coated-wire suppliers. The wire specification has to match:

  • The injection mold cavity design

  • The PE resin used for leaf molding

  • The expected leaf length and branch stiffness

  • The downstream branch tying process

For the PE injection molding equipment that uses this wire, see our PE injection molding machine for Christmas trees and PE injection mold for Christmas tree branches pages.

Why Choose ONE PLASTIC?

Christmas Tree Industry Specialist: ONE PLASTIC is not a general coated-wire supplier. We focus on the artificial Christmas tree supply chain - from PVC Christmas tree film and PE materials to machinery and assembly hardware. When you order support wire from us, you are ordering from a supplier who understands how the wire performs inside a molded PE leaf.

Matched Supply System: We also supply the PE injection molds and the hollow rivets that this wire ultimately connects to. Sourcing the matched components from one supplier avoids the common problem of wire that does not fit the mold or rivet specification correctly.

Consistent Dimensional Tolerance: Wire is produced to consistent diameter and coating-thickness tolerance. This matters for automated injection molding: wire that is slightly over or under specification causes mold fit issues and inconsistent leaf quality.

Custom Specifications: Beyond standard sizes, we can produce custom wire diameters, coating colors, and cut lengths to match your specific PE tree design.

One-Stop Supply for Tree Production: For factories setting up or expanding PE Christmas tree production, we can supply wire, injection machinery, molds, and assembly hardware together - simplifying purchasing and ensuring component compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use uncoated iron wire instead of coated?

Technically yes, but most PE tree factories prefer coated wire for three reasons: better bonding with PE during injection molding, rust prevention during storage and transport, and safer wire ends in the finished tree. The cost difference between coated and plain iron wire is typically small compared to the quality difference in the finished leaves.

What wire diameter should I order?

Diameter depends on tree size and branch stiffness target. 0.5-0.7 mm is the most common range for standard full-size trees. For tabletop trees, 0.4-0.5 mm is typical. For premium or commercial-grade trees, 0.7-1.0 mm provides heavier branch support. If you are unsure, send us a sample of your PE leaf design or mold cavity and we can recommend a matched wire specification.

Do I need to specify the cut length, or do you supply in spools?

Both options are available. If you have established leaf length specifications and high volume, pre-cut wire is faster for your production line. If you produce multiple leaf sizes or want the flexibility to adjust length, continuous spools are more practical.

Can I get wire in colors other than green?

Yes. Green is standard because it matches common PE leaf colors, but we can supply coated wire in other colors for specialty trees (white, black, or custom colors). If your product line includes non-green trees, request the appropriate coating color at the time of order.

Is the PVC coating food-safe?

This wire is produced for artificial Christmas tree manufacturing, not food-contact applications. If you have a different intended use that requires food-contact compliance, the standard coating specification is not appropriate.

Can you supply other PE tree production components?

Yes. Beyond support wire, we supply PE injection molding machines, injection molds, robot arms for automated branch handling, and downstream assembly hardware. Contact us with your full production requirements for a combined quotation.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on the exact wire specification and quantity requirement. Contact us with your specification and target quantity for a specific quote.
