6mm PVC foam board is a mid-weight rigid panel that sits in the practical sweet spot for signage, display fabrication, interior fit-out, and light cabinetry work. It is thick enough to feel solid and hold fasteners, yet still light enough to mount on walls, hang from ceilings, or ship economically.

For buyers evaluating PVC foam board thickness, 6mm is the point where the material transitions from a flexible sign substrate (3-5mm range) to a genuinely rigid, self-supporting panel. It routes cleanly, prints well, bonds easily, and can be used as a structural facing material in furniture and interior applications - which is why it is one of the most frequently specified thicknesses in the PVC foam board category.

ONE PLASTIC manufactures 6mm PVC foam board as part of our full PVC foam board product range, covering thicknesses from 1mm to 30mm. We supply 6mm board in standard and custom sheet sizes to sign makers, display fabricators, interior fit-out companies, and furniture manufacturers.

  • Material: Free-foam PVC (closed-cell structure)

Why Choose 6mm?

Thickness matters in PVC foam board because it directly determines what you can do with the material. Here is why 6mm is one of the most popular choices:

Rigid Enough to Be Self-Supporting: At 6mm, PVC foam board holds its shape as a freestanding panel without backing or framing at moderate sizes (up to roughly 600 x 900mm unsupported). This makes it practical for countertop displays, A-frame inserts, and wall-mounted sign panels where the board needs to stay flat on its own.

Ideal for CNC Routing: 6mm provides enough depth for clean V-groove cutting, channel letter fabrication, and profiled edge routing. Thinner boards (3mm) tend to flex during routing and limit the depth of decorative cuts. At 6mm, you get clean, consistent results on standard CNC equipment.

Prints and Laminates Well: The smooth, dense surface accepts UV flatbed printing, screen printing, and vinyl lamination without bleed-through or surface texture issues. 6mm board lies flat on printer beds and does not bow during printing - a common problem with very thin sheets.

Holds Fasteners: Unlike 3mm board, 6mm PVC foam board can hold screws, rivets, and mechanical fasteners with reasonable pull-out strength. This matters for fabricated assemblies, cabinet components, and display structures that are screwed or riveted together.

Light Enough for Wall Mounting: At approximately 3.0-3.3 kg/m2, 6mm PVC foam board is easy to mount with adhesive, double-sided tape, or standoff hardware. It does not require heavy-duty wall anchors or structural support.

Cost-Effective Mid-Range: 6mm sits between budget-thin (3mm) and premium-thick (10mm+) pricing. For most signage and display applications, it provides the best balance of performance and cost.

Applications of 6mm PVC Foam Board

Signage and Graphics

6mm is a go-to thickness for commercial signage: retail signs, wayfinding panels, menu boards, real estate signs, and exhibition graphics. It provides the rigidity needed for professional-looking flat panels, and the smooth white surface prints crisply with UV flatbed printers.

Display and POS Fabrication

Point-of-sale displays, product glorifiers, countertop units, and promotional structures. At 6mm, the board can be CNC-routed into shaped panels, V-grooved for folding, and bonded into three-dimensional assembled structures.

Interior Fit-Out and Partitions

Bathroom partitions, kitchen splashbacks, wall cladding panels, and ceiling tiles. 6mm PVC foam board is waterproof, mold-resistant, and easy to clean - making it a practical alternative to painted MDF or plasterboard in wet or humid environments.

Light Cabinetry and Furniture Facing

Cabinet door panels, drawer fronts, shelf liners, and furniture backing. 6mm provides enough substance to look and feel like a solid panel when used as a facing material on cabinet frames. It is lighter than MDF and does not swell when exposed to moisture.

Architectural Models and Prototyping

Model builders and architects use 6mm PVC foam board for structural models, mockups, and prototypes. It cuts cleanly, glues easily, and can be sanded and painted for finished presentations.

PVC foam board application

Fabrication Guide for 6mm PVC Foam Board

Cutting

Method Notes
CNC Router Best for profiled cuts, lettering, and shaped panels. Use single-flute or compression-flute bits for clean edges.
Table Saw Use fine-tooth carbide blade (60+ teeth). Produces clean, straight edges.
Circular Saw Same blade recommendation as table saw. Good for breaking down full sheets.
Utility Knife Score and snap works for straight cuts, but CNC or saw gives better edge quality at 6mm.

CNC Routing

6mm is thick enough for effective V-groove folding: score a V-shaped channel on one side, then fold the board to create clean 90-degree bends for box construction and display assembly. Typical V-groove depth for 6mm board is 4-4.5mm (leaving 1.5-2mm as the hinge).

Printing

UV flatbed printing is the standard method. The smooth, white surface provides good ink adhesion and color accuracy. No primer is needed for most UV ink systems. Screen printing and solvent printing are also compatible.

Bonding

PVC foam board bonds well with cyanoacrylate (CA glue), PVC-specific solvent cement, two-part epoxy, and hot melt adhesive. For structural assemblies, solvent cement produces the strongest bond. For quick assembly, CA glue or hot melt is faster.

Bending

V-groove and fold is the standard method for creating bends in 6mm PVC foam board. Heat bending using a strip heater is possible but less common - the foam core can deform unevenly under heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6mm PVC foam board strong enough for outdoor signs?

For short-term outdoor use (weeks to a few months), 6mm PVC foam board performs well. It is waterproof and UV-stable. For permanent outdoor installations exposed to wind loading, consider 8mm or 10mm for additional rigidity, or use 6mm with a supporting frame or channel.

Can 6mm PVC foam board replace MDF?

In many applications, yes. 6mm PVC foam board is lighter than MDF, completely waterproof, and is highly resistant to swelling, rot, and mold growth under normal use conditions. It is widely used as an MDF replacement in bathroom cabinetry, kitchen installations, and any application where moisture exposure is a concern.

What is the difference between standard density and high-density 6mm foam board?

Standard density (0.50-0.55 g/cm3) is suitable for most signage and display applications. High-density (0.60-0.70 g/cm3) provides better screw-holding strength, stiffer panels, and improved CNC edge quality - recommended for furniture, cabinetry, and heavy-duty fabrication work. High-density board is heavier and costs more per sheet.

Can I get 6mm PVC foam board in black?

Yes. We produce 6mm PVC foam board in black, grey, and custom colors in addition to standard white. Black foam board is commonly used for photography backdrops, display panels, and applications where white edges are not desirable.

What is the maximum sheet size available in 6mm?

Our standard maximum is 2050 x 3050 mm. Larger sheets may be available on request depending on production scheduling. Contact our sales team for non-standard sizes.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ depends on your required size, color, and density. For standard white 6mm board in standard sheet sizes, MOQ is typically low. Contact us for a specific quote.
